How can I become a firefighter? Employment is strictly regulated by the Shelby Twp. Civil Service Commission. Currently (which may change without notification), requirements for application include: Firefighter I and II, State of Michigan Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic) and a High school diploma or GED, and 60 credit hours from an accredited College/University all at the time of Hire.. Then you will take a Written Test, followed by an Oral Interview, and must pass a Physical Agility test, Which will establish an Eligibly List which is valid for 2 years or until exhausted. Shelby Twp. Fire Dept. uses the “Rule of Five” The top 5 candidates will be interviewed by the Fire Chief (and/or designees), out of the 5 one will be picked for the job. The next candidate will be interviewed to bring the pool back to 5, out of which the next will be picked until all positions are filled. Prior to starting the Position of Firefighter/Paramedic you must successfully pass a Psychological Evaluation, Drug/Alcohol Test, and a Medical Physical Exam. And that is all it takes to be Hired at STFD....But the job is worth it! Currently Shelby Twp. Fire Dept. is not accepting applications. You may wish to contact Shelby Twp. Human Resources to be put on a list for notification once STFD is accepting applications. Does the Shelby Township Fire Department charge for services? There is no fee for our fire and rescue services for those who don’t abuse the system. However, the Fire Department does charge for emergency ambulance calls to help defer the cost of providing service. How many people work for the Fire Department? There are 50 people in the Fire Suppression Division. These are the people who ride the trucks and ambulances. There are an additional 10 people assigned to our other Divisions, 4 in Fire Prevention, 3 in Training/EMS, and Administration. All of these people play a crucial role in our goal of providing the best possible protection for the lives and property of the citizens of Shelby Township. What type of schedule do firefighter's work? Firefighters/Paramedics assigned to Fire Suppression duties work 24 hour shifts, from 8:00a.m. to 8:00a.m. They work 24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, 24 hours off, 24 hours on, 96 hours off schedule. When not responding to calls the firefighters train, either in the station or in the Township, maintain equipment and practice skills. What kind of emergencies can the Fire Department respond to? In addition to their Fire fighting skills, Shelby Twp. Firefighters are trained to respond to medical emergencies, extrication from vehicles and machinery, confined space rescues, (tunnels, tanks, sewers etc.) high angle rescues, water rescue or hazardous materials (HAZMAT) incidents.
